Chapter 266

The normally defiant and rebellious Thaddeus was surprisingly docile, his movements as compliant as

a filleted fish in a frying pan, flipping over at the slightest nudge.

Evadne raised an eyebrow at his compliance, her rosy lips pressed into a thin line.

His broad and muscular back was exposed to her, each sinew and muscle clearly visible.

The sight of a large bruise on his back caused her pupils to contract in shock. Despite her effort to

maintain her composure, the sight caused a painful twinge in her heart. When Evadne fell silent,

Thaddeus thought she was startled. He attempted to turn around, only to be firmly stopped by her.

“Hold still, let me take a look,” she ordered.

A

The doctor said it’ll fade with time,” Thaddeus replied in a low soothing voice, sounding more like he

was comforting her than discussing his own injuries.

“Do I look like I cant see?” Evadne retorted, her tone sharp and cold.

Caught off guard by her retort, Thaddeus gave a sigh of exasperation. “I never realized how fiery you

could be when we were together. You’ve sure got a bite, and you’re gutsy.”

“I used to pretend all the time. Pretending to please you,” Evadne replied. Her long lashes cast a

shadow over her eyes as her fingers traced the scars on his back. Her voice was icy cold as she

continued, “I thought if I was gentle and caring, you would eventually warm up to me. But when I saw

your true colors, I backed off. I didn’t need to pretend anymore. Looking back, I was so foolish. I made

a fool of myself for a man who would never love me. It wasn’t worth it.”

Thaddeus’s breath hitched, a bitter taste lingering on his tongue. He had been blind, obsessed with his

own Insecurities.

“Evadne.”

“Turn around,” Evadne cut him off.

“The doctor already checked me.”

“I don’t trust anyone else, only myself. Turn around.” Evadne’s voice held a detached tone, her eyes

filled with a stoic acceptance of life and death.

Thaddeus was a bit confused, but he did as she asked.

Their eyes locked as he turned.

Evadne’s heart skipped a beat at the sight of his chiseled abs. The man was a scoundrel, but his

physique was undeniably attractive.

She steadied her heart and began to check his legs, arms, and abdomen.

Thaddeus watched her, his heart pounding as he saw the determination in her eyes.

At that moment, he desperately wanted to confirm something.

“You’re lucky to have a soldier’s physique. There’s no serious injury, but the bruise on your back still

needs to be attended to. My friend Suri’s family just developed a new medicine for external injuries. I’ll

ask her for some and have it sent over,” Evadne said, her hand gently rubbing the area around his

ribcage.

Suddenly, her hand was caught in his grip. Thaddeus placed her warm hand on his chest.

Evadne was taken aback, her heart pounding. “What are you doing?”

He looked at her, his gaze piercing and his breath heavy. “Don’t you need to check here too?”

“No, let go!” Evadne said, struggling against him.

But Thaddeus was stronger, pulling her towards him. Their bodies pressed against each other, their

body heat mingling.

The next moment, his uninjured hand–wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer.

“Thaddeus.”

Before she could finish, he silenced her with a kiss. His lips moved against hers, taking her breath

away. Her soft whimper echoed in the silence of the room. Her fingers curled into his chest, leaving

faint scratch marks on his skin.

Embarrassed and flustered, Evadne bit his lip in retaliation.

Thaddeus didn’t flinch, instead holding her even closer.

The taste of blood filled their mouths.

Thaddeus didn’t let her go until she was almost out of breath.

They both were panting heavily, beads of sweat dotting their foreheads. Thaddeus’s lower lip was

bruised from her bite.

Thaddeus, just because you saved me doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want!” Evadne shouted,

her cheeks flushed and her breath ragged.

“You said it yourself,” Thaddeus said quietly, touching his injured lip. “You said you owed me a favor.

And as long as it wasn’t too much, you would do it.”

“Isn’t this too much?” Evadne cried, her voice choked with tears. “When will you let me go? We’re

divorced, remember? You were the one who kicked me out!”

Then, I regret it.” Thaddeus’s voice was hoarse, and his eyes were moist. “I regret it all.”

He wasn’t like Evadne, who could laugh when she wanted to, cry when she felt like it, live freely, and

express her emotions at will.

He didn’t have that luxury. For over twenty years, he had suppressed his emotions, kept himself under

strict control. He had forgotten how to express his feelings, how to share what was in his heart.

“What did you say?” Evadne looked stunned, her beautiful eyes wide open.

“Evadne, I regret it Thaddeus repeated, his voice soft but firm, “I regret divorcing you, regret letting you

go.

Can you give me another chance, for us to start over?”

Evadne thought, “Start over? From where, Thaddeus? You don’t even know what has happened

between us in the past thirteen years, you don’t even know that we lost a child and you want to start

over with me. How could you dare to say that?”

Evadne’s sparkling eyes gradually darkened, devoid of any joy, like a night pearl covered in dust.

Seeing her cold expression, Thaddeus felt his heart tighten, his once fiery passion began to cool.

Thaddeus, we are over. Do you understand what that means? It means there’s no future for us.”

Evadne’s eyes were shining, but it didn’t stop her from being ruthless, “Between you and me, there

wasn’t even a spark, let alone a flame. From the start of our marriage to the divorce, it’s been nothing

but hurdles and mistakes. My dad once told me, a beautiful love story is one that sails smoothly from

start to finish. The only reason we were married for those brief three years was because I kept lowering

my standards to be with you. What is there to reminisce about this broken relationship? Start over with

you, have I lost my mind?”

Her words were like sharp knives, each one stabbing him, cutting into his heart.

Thaddeus wasn’t ready to lose her. He reached out to hold her hand again.

But this time, she wouldn’t give him the chance, skillfully avoiding his grasp and leaving him empty–

handed.

swear, I won’t.”

Thaddeus took a heavy breath, his voice was hoarse, “I won’t anymore, Evadne. This time, you don’t

have to do anything, just stand there. Let me pursue you.”

Evadne’s heart pounded erratically, like a roller coaster with sudden highs and lows.

Her palms were sweaty, her breathing erratic, and her heart was racing.

“Pursue me? Mr. Thaddeus, didn’t you once call me a shameless cunning woman? I’m not some

delicate flower like Acacia. How could you possibly be interested in me?”

Evadne sniffed, her lips curled in disdain, “Besides, the Evadne you see now is not the same llana you

used to manipulate. There are plenty of men who want to pursue me, do you think a blacklisted jerk like

you has any chance among my suitors?”

“Evadne, I really.”

“Stop talking, I don’t want to hear it.”

Evadne covered her ears with both hands, turned around and walked briskly towards the door, “I’ll just

consider the things you said to me today the ramblings of a concussed brain. I’m treating your injuries

because I don’t want to owe you anything. Once you’re healed, well go our separate ways!”

With a bang, the door to the room closed shut once again.

Thaddeus’s eyes were bloodshot, his hand that had been reaching out to touch her was trembling in

mid–air, before slowly falling back down.

1 really have fallen for you.”

Evadne didn’t return to Thaddeus but went to find Gordon to inquire about the medical condition and

took the medical reports and records.

She planned to study them carefully when she got home.

Because she had just performed a full preliminary examination on Thaddeus, and the situation was

quite serious. His injuries were not minor, and if not handled well, they could lead to serious

complications.

The Rolls Royce headed towards Skyrim.

On the way, Jason was driving, Bennett sat in the passenger seat, and Cassius was sitting in the back

with his arms around Evadne.

In Evadne’s arms were the medical records and X–rays of Thaddeus. She rested her head on

Cassius’s shoulder, sighing repeatedly.

Her mood was visibly low.

‘What’s wrong, Evadne? You seem upset.”

Cassius turned his head and gently touched her soft cheek, “Is it because Thaddeus is in bad shape?

Bennett turned his head and cut in, “Evadne, if Thaddeus is in bad shape, that’s good news. Why are

you upset?”

Evadne failed to say anything.

“Bennett, do you forget what kind of person our little sister is? She’s gracious and kind–hearted. This

time Thaddeus got hurt saving her, if anything happens to him, how could she live with that?” Cassius

sighed.

Bennett seemed annoyed, but couldn’t say anything else.

“Thaddeus is seriously injured, but he was rescued in time and his life is not in danger.” Evadne finally

spoke softly.

“Well, that’s good.”

Cassius asked confusedly, “If that’s the case, why are you still upset?“,

“It’s nothing serious.” Evadne paused, then said softly, “It’s just that Thaddeus, he said he wants to

pursue me.”
